Board of Directors Meeting Monday, May 9, 2022– 4:00 p.m.
The meeting was called to order at 4:01 pm by Lion President Joe Jackson. The invocation was given by Lion Fran Metcalf. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Darlene Faulconer. The quorum was established with fourteen (14) members present. Members present were Lions Joe Jackson, Joe Gallagher, Colin Raynor, Tom Swanson, Margie Gillette, Fran Metcalf, Darlene Faulconer, Tom Porte, Bob Leonard, Tim Grove, Alison Boyle, Ron Mancuso, Don Meek, and Marcia Van Tassell. There were no guests present. Lion Margie Gillette asked if someone would go to The Terraces to pick up a large quantity of eyeglasses, and Lion Ron Mancuso said he could.
Action Items:
1. Minutes of April 11, 2022 meeting. Lion Tom Porte said it was actually Lion Tom Swanson who gave the update on the Lions Thrift Store and not himself. Lion Joe Gallagher moved to approve the minutes of the April 11, 2022 board of directors meeting as amended. Lion Tim Grove seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
2. Treasurer’s Report. The Treasurer’s Report for April was presented by Treasurer Darlene Faulconer. The Administrative account holds $70,170 while the Charities Account has $180,960. Net revenue was $2,405. Grants paid in April totaled $7,000. Lion Tom Porte moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report. Lion Bob Leonard seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. Lion Darlene reported that the bank said the Thrift Store credit card needs someone’s name on it. It was decided to haves Carlo’s name on it and remove Lion Al Greenwood. Lion Tom Swanson said he does not want his name on it. Lion Tom Porte moved to make those changes to the credit card. Lion Ron Mancuso seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. The following can sign checks: Lions Darlene Faulconer, Joe Jackson, Joe Gallagher, Al Greenwood, and Colin Raynor. Lion Darlene presented some CD and Money Market information. It was decided that $250,000 will go into a FDIC insured account now and the same amount later. Lion Tom Porte read the finance committee report and moved to invest at greater than a 3.1% rate. Lion Joe Gallagher seconded the motion. It was amended to remove “FDIC.” The motion was unanimously approved. Lion Tom Porte moved that BSLC Charities open a Capital Improvement Fund in a Money Market account. Lion Joe Gallagher seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. Lion Tom Porte moved that BSLC Charities annually transfer the net revenues over expenses to the Capital Improvement Fund when the treasurer determines that all revenues and expenditures have been recorded. Lion Joe Gallagher seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
3. Membership Issues. Lion Bob Leonard presented the application of Vincent Mansolillo who is sponsored by Lion Anthony Mansolillo. Lion Bob moved to accept Vincent’s application. Tom Porte seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. Lion Bob explained that dues for new memberships are prorated by quarter. Yearly dues will be $80 if the member joins in the first quarter, $60 in the second quarter, $40 in the third quarter, and $20 in the fourth quarter. Name badges will be $10, and vests will be $15.
4. Property Lighting Improvement Update. No news was reported.
5. Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards. Lion Tom Porte recommended that Lion Darlene Faulconer be awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship.
6. Repurposing office Space. Lion Joe Jackson said his office is used the least. The Florida Lions Eye Clinic has been asking for space. Lion Joe Gallagher moved that the president’s office becomes an open office to be used by FLEC. Lion Tom Porte seconded the motion which passed by a vote of 11 Yes and 2 No votes.
7. Proposed 60th Anniversary of BSLC as Fundraiser. Lion Darlene moved for a date in November. The original charter date was October 19, 1962. Lion Marcia Van Tassell seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
Board Updates:
President’s Report:
• FLEC newspaper report. Lion Joe Jackson reported on the May 4th newspaper article featuring the FLEC which made no mention of the financial contributions of the BSLC. Olivia and Robin have apologized but said they have no oversight after the reporter writes the article. The Thrift Store volunteers were the first to find the lack of mention of the BSLC. Lion Joe also said there was an outbreak of COVID after the MD35 convention in Miami. LCI is proposed an adjustment of dues by $3 in 2023, $2 in 2024, and $2 in 2025. Dues have not been adjusted in 10 years. Volunteers at the Thrift Store feel they are unappreciated by the board of directors. We need to let them know we do appreciate them. Lion Joe Gallagher suggested using some administrative funds. Lion Joe Jackson said it should come from individuals. Lion Fran Metcalf is willing to give something once a month. Lion Don Meek suggested that we just do it rather than formalize it. Lion Joe Jackson suggested we cover the cost of doughnuts every week and pizza once a month. Lion Joe Gallagher moved to use $2,000 per year as appreciation for volunteers. Lion Darlene Faulconer seconded the motion which passed by seven Yes to four No votes.
• Florida Lions Eye Clinic. Lion Don Meek reported that 235 people were served in March and 191 in April. There were 204 volunteers in March and 237 in April.
• Programs. Lion Don Meek said there will be a speaker from STC with a satellite office in Miramar Outlets in May. He hopes to have the FLEC Executive Director Robin Goldstone Garcia in June. Lion Joe Jackson wants to change the order of events at club meetings. He would move business to before dinner and have the speaker end the meeting. Lion Don Meek moved to donate $1,000 to Naples Therapeutic Riding Center. Lion Fran Metcalf seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
• Lions Thrift Store. Lion Tom Swanson reported that the Thrift Store took in $48,871 in April. The telephone does not work so Comcast needs to be contacted. There is a new flag on the flag pole.
• Facilities. Lion Bob Leonard would like to do a light finish on the floors in the Lions Center.
• Bingo. Lion Fran Metcalf said that Bingo is doing well with the new machine.
• Tea Party Date. There is no date yet.
• Screening Project. Lion Joe Jackson said that about 250 children were screened in April in five schools.
• Grants. Lion Bob Leonard moved to grant $500 to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. Lion Tim Grove seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. Lion Bob moved to donate $1,000 to the Bonita Springs Senior Center. Lion Tim Grove seconded the motion. Lion Joe Gallagher amended the motion to $5,000. Lion Tim seconded. The motion passed with 10 Yes and 3 No votes.
