  • $3.8 million set aside for 3 long-term goals

    CP 3INITIATIVES005 13478852 ver1.0 640 480

Grumbling stomachs and blurry vision begone for underprivileged schoolchildren, and forget about any out-of-school distractions.

That’s happening in Collier County thanks to the Naples Children & Education Foundation earmarking $3.8 million this year toward three initiatives to address vision, hunger and out-of-school programs.

The foundation sponsors the Naples Winter Wine Festival annually to raise money for charities that serve local children.

Funding for long-term strategic initiatives is separate from annual grants to charities, but both are made possible because of money raised at the wine festival. The 2015 festival was held Jan. 23-25. Annual grant awards will be announced March 9.

In 2005 and 2010, the foundation commissioned studies to identify significant gaps in children’s services, leading to long-term initiatives involving multiple partners for comprehensive solutions. To date, $42 million has been dedicated to seven long-term endeavors.

The vision initiative, called “Now You See It,” will receive $1 million over three years from the $3.8 million awarded this year, according to a recent NCEF announcement.

The program is a collaboration of the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic, Florida’s Vision Quest and Lighthouse of Collier. About 20,000 children a year are screened.

You can join a local club that meets in person. A cyber club that meets online. Or a special interest club based on your profession, a hobby or anything you care about. You can plan a local project to protect the environment. Recycle eyeglasses to help the working poor. Or bring clean water to a remote village. Whatever you choose, you’ll be sharing, caring and making a difference.

Join an International Network of Volunteers and Friends

As a Lions club member, you'll join a local group of service-minded men and women who are doing local volunteer work to support your community – right now. You'll also become a member of Lions Clubs International, a respected international organization, a leader in your local community and a friend to people in need.

There are many reasons to become a member. As a Lion, you will:

  • Bonita Springs Assistance Office

BSAO At the Bonita Springs Assistance Office we believe in providing a “hand up” not a “hand out.” We extend the helping hand of assistance, while enabling clients to retain their dignity. We show clients who are able to work how to locate jobs and become productive members of the community. We specialize in working with elderly residents and families with young children.

Our mission is to provide temporary assistance to residents of Bonita Springs who have been affected by an unexpected crisis. Our goal is to foster independence and self reliance through education and by bridging the financial needs of the recipient.

  • Eye Clinic

In 2008, the Bonita Springs Lions Club elected to commit its resources to the creation of a free independent eye clinic.
The Club has been a leader in funding eye care in Lee County and surrounding areas, and the Clinic is an important expansion to its mission.
The facility, which is housed on the campus of The Bonita Springs Lions Club, provides comprehensive eye care for adults and children who fall below the poverty level and are uninsured.

  • Golf aids Lions Club efforts, adds special memories

    2015Golf

The event was a success, and for its return to the club last weekend, the Lonkarts went a step further, also sponsoring the sixth hole. “We’ll enjoy the view even more,” he said. “The cooperation of the club has been great. It’s certainly a fantastic place to have it,” he said, during the post-tournament awards luncheon that was moved to the Worthington clubhouse this time from the Lions Club headquarters last year. A total of 56 participants — foursomes of Lions Club and Worthington Club members plus friends and guests — played in a scramble format the 18-hole, 6,867-yard, par 72 course that was designed by the renowned Gordon Lewis. Special long drive, closest to pin and longest putt contests and challenges along with many raffles and silent auctions of valuable prizes during the lunch added to the excitement and fundraising.

Headquartered in Santa Rosa, CA, Canine Companions is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs, and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. The result is a life full of increased independence and loving companionship.

Lions, Lioness, and other service clubs, working through the Lions Project can help CCI's efforts to offer greater independence and self-esteem to more people with disabilities.

CCI dogs are uniquely prepared for their lives of service by living their first 16 to 18 months with volunteer "puppy raisers." These committed, caring, unselfish people socialize the dogs, taking them everywhere: the grocery store, work, the movies, shopping, to school, out in public, on airplanes, etc. This socialization together with the loving care these special dogs receive enable them to go everywhere their masters go.

  • We Serve

Our present membership of 140 members responds with enthusiasm to our motto "We Serve". Over eighty percent of our members consistently give volunteer hours of service.
The programs that we support are too numerous to include all of them; however, our distribution of funds focuses on programs that identify needs for the visually impaired.
Educational needs in our local schools and various community projects can count on the Bonita Springs Lions Club to lend a helping hand.
